The provincial government of New Brunswick has introduced significant amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act aimed at curbing impaired driving. If passed, these changes will enhance the administrative penalties and implement a program for immediate roadside suspensions.
Key changes include:
Immediate licence suspensions at the roadside for failing or refusing a screening test.
Administrative penalties including a 15-month licence suspension, a 30-day vehicle impoundment, and a mandatory ignition interlock program for 12 months following other requirements.
Strengthened penalties for drivers with a blood-alcohol content of 0.05 per cent to less than 0.08 per cent, introducing financial penalties starting at $200 and increasing with subsequent violations.
